Short Introduction

Hi my name is Colleen,

I work with young people who are having a rough time and need support

I spend time getting to know you so you feel safe and listened to

I don't judge and I don't tell you what to do

We can work on fun projects, go out, talk, create or learn new 'stuff'

I hope to help you to feel happier and more able to cope

I love animals, art, making things, going out exploring and music :)

Long Introduction

My name is Colleen and I am an engagement and educational specialist. I work with young people, who are having a really difficult time in school and/or life, and who may find it hard to trust that anyone can or will help them.

I work with a wide range of young people, generally between 12-25, most who don't go to school and feel isolated because of their own particular circumstances, and mental health difficulties.

'Mental health difficulties' is a really broad term, but to give an example, many referred young people feel horribly OVERWHELMED, sad, lonely, 'different' or/and confused about who they are and how they fit into this complicated world.

Many of the young people I work with are neurodivergent (fun fact), 15-20% of us are, so you are in good company :)

Or it could be that you haven't left the house for a long time, have SM (situational mutism), are confused about your identity, have been bullied, or involved in 'stuff' that has got you into trouble, or perhaps you have been in hospital, are in care or just need a more accessible/personalised timetable that makes you a priority..

No matter how huge that 'thing' that is affecting your life feels right now, YOU are NOT on your own. Yes, I also know you might be thinking 'blah. blah, what does she know. But, I'm telling you that I REALLY DO know, why do you think I have devoted my life to this job :) ...

So, I  know, because I KNOW... and I also know because I have worked with 100's of young people over the years who have allowed me into their lives and have shared their stories with me.

My belief is that you are unique, (which you are), I assume nothing (except that you can feel better) , I will 'listen' to you (or read/hear through a trusted person, your thoughts if you can't communicate verbally) without judgement, and start our journey from there, generally with a cup of tea and a biscuit.

I am not a teacher, or a school, yes, learning is embedded in all of our work, but outside of and very different to school. I have designed alternative education for many years WITH young people and I am an artist.  I always work creatively and prioritise your mental health.

We will talk / communicate a lot and plan our work together. Quite often I will support you in developing tools to keep you safe and emotionally regulated, we also go out lots and practice social/life skills and independence, work on  projects, go on visits and do activities that open your mind. But don't panic, all the above is just a guide line and everything that we do will be gently encouraged but in your own sweet time :)

I want to help you to find your passion, be connected to the wider world and seek out learning that shapes your own future aspirations. We can also work together on GCSE's or Functional Skills to catch up, study and prepare you for exams, and think about a return to school or college if this is part of your plan :)
